About

I am a guy from the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis, born and raised on a small dairy farm near Sparta, Wisconsin, who inexplicably came to love world literature.    My goal is to have a United States book blog that is as good as the many English, Irish, Scotland, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, and Canadian book blogs  which I follow closely.  The emphasis will be on world literature, not just one particular region or nation.

I’m happy to get emails.  My email address is:    anokatony@gmail.com

    • Kimbofo, you are one of my inspirations! As you know, I read your “Reading Matters” nearly every day and treasure it as a source of good leads. Where else I could I have found out about Salley Vickers?

  6. A great start – determination and consistency are the key! I am sure you have both.

Follow the stats (install Google Analytics if you haven’t already) and watch what works. In a year ot ttwo’s time you will find it hard to keep up with the review copies sent to you – you may never have to buy a book again.

I have added you to my blog roll

  7. As you probably know, I follow “A Common Reader” closely. One of the reasons I like it is that you select books that are somewhat off the beaten path to write about. I just checked “Memoirs of an Anti-Semite”
out of the library. (I did have the courage to carry it out of the library, but still have qualms about being seen with it.) Thanks for your comments – am looking forward to my first review copy – will have to see it to believe it.

  12. love your blog, just stumbled upon it while doing a search on Louise Erdrich; your blog entries are as interesting as any short story I’ve read. Thank you for adding to my reading interests… so much to read (while I paint away:)

  13. Hi bhanu,
That’s high praise indeed comparing my entries to a short story, because I value fiction about ten times more than non-fiction. Your painting blog looks original and interesting. I will look it over carefully soon.

  14. This is a great site for good reads! May I suggest the work of the English writer Ivy Compton-Burnett (1884-1969)? Though her books are challenging, they are immensely satisfying and provide insight into the Victorian household.

    • Hi BKu,
Thank You. I know that Ivy Compton-Burnett is a great writer, and I’ve attempted to read a novel of hers a couple of times, but so far without success. Like you say, she is challenging. It’s been a long time since I’ve attempted one of her novels, and maybe now I could succeed. There have been a few instances where I have difficulty reading an author but then come back several years later, and that same author will become one of my favorites.

re: book review request by award-winning author

    Dear Tony’s Book World:

I’m an award-winning author with a new book of fiction out last month.
Ugly To Start With is a series of thirteen interrelated stories about
adolescence published by West Virginia University Press.

All the stories in my collection have been previously published in
well-regarded print and online literary magazines such as The Iowa
Review, Passager, The Bitter Oleander, Confrontation, Salt River
Review, The Foliate Oak. and The Cortland Review.

Can I interest you in reviewing it?

If you write me back at johnmcummings@aol.com, I can email you a PDF of my book. If you require a bound copy, please ask, and I will forward your reply to my publisher. Or you can write directly to Abby Freeland at:

    Abby.Freeland@mail.wvu.edu

My publisher, I should add, can also offer your readers a free excerpt of my book through a link from your blog to my publisher’s website:

Here’s what Jacob Appel, celebrated author of
Dyads and The Vermin Episode, says about my new collection: “In Ugly to Start With, set in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Cummings tackles the challenges of boyhood adventure and family conflict in a taut, crystalline style that captures the triumphs and tribulations of small-town life. He has a gift for transcending the particular experiences to his characters to capture the universal truths of human affection and suffering–emotional truths that the members of his audience will recognize from their own experiences of childhood and adolescence.”

My short stories have appeared in more than seventy-five literary journals, including North American Review, The Kenyon Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, and The Chattahoochee Review. Twice I have been nominated for The Pushcart Prize. My short story “The Scratchboard Project” received an honorable mention in The Best American Short Stories 2007.

I am also the author of the nationally acclaimed coming-of-age novel The Night I Freed John Brown (Philomel Books, Penguin Group, 2009), winner of The Paterson Prize for Books for Young Readers (Grades 7-12) and one of ten books recommended by USA TODAY.
